Mrs. Ami Patel
Hola! Bonjour! Salut! Shalom! Namaste! Ni Hao! Aloha! And of course, Hello! I am thrilled to be the ESOL teacher at Lee County Elementary School this year. I have been at Lee County Elementary for the past five years, where I have taught both 5th grade and 4th grade. I have also taught for 7 years in another system prior to my move to Lee County, giving me a total of 13 years of teaching experience. I have my Masters in Early Childhood Education and an ESOL Endorsement Certification. I have always been interested in other cultures and enjoy learning about my students through their personal experiences and backgrounds. This year, I hope to enrich my students with new experiences and help them become successful in the classroom. In order to assist my students this year, I plan to follow the Inclusion Model. I will come into my students’ classrooms to assist them in their content area classes. I will also take the time to pull students out into smaller groups, when needed, to provide the necessary instruction for them to be successful. I am here to help and am glad to meet with parents at any time throughout the year. Please do not hesitate to call/email me so that we can set up a meeting.
The English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) English Program in Lee County School System was developed in compliance with federal mandates to ensure that the Limited English Proficient (LEP) students in the school system are provided with appropriate instructional assistance in acquiring the English language skills necessary for full academic participation in a monolingual English classroom. The major goals for each student are to develop their reading, writing, speaking and listening skills so they are successful within the classroom setting and the community.
There are five critical standards for the English Language Learners (ELL):
- 1) English language learners communicate information, ideas, and concepts necessary for academic success in the content area of Language Arts
- 2) English language learners communicate information, ideas, and concepts necessary for academic success in the content area of Mathematics
- 3) English language learners communicate information, ideas, and concepts necessary for academic success in the content area of Science
- 4) English language learners communicate information, ideas, and concepts necessary for academic success in the content area of Social Studies
- 5) English language learners communicate for Social and Instructional purposes within the school setting
Toward the end of each school year (usually between January and March), ELL students will participate in the ACCESS test. The ACCESS test is a standards-based, criterion referenced English language proficiency test that is measured along the five critical standards outlined above. The scores from this test will help determine if the students have reached the proficiency level to exit the ESOL program. We usually receive the scores from this test during the last weeks of the school year. A letter and score report will be sent home to each of the parents with information regarding know how their child performed and a plan for the following year.
